You should get some Aqua-Guards for covering your Hickman site during showers. I used them for a several months until I decided that the Tegaderm was waterproof enough for taking showers. (I’ve had a Hickman for over a year). Just a little unsolicited opinion. 🙂

Thank you for the suggestion Vikki. I do use Aqua-Guards but with the movement of my arms while washing my hair makes them become loose. Do you find with the Tegaderm alone your skin becomes very sticky? Do you then have do a dressing change more often?

When I first got the Hickman, they said to do dressing changes once a week… I used alcohol, chloroprep, and skin conditioner each time and had horrible itching and a rash… I’ve found changing the dressing 3 times a week and cutting out the chloroprep and skin conditioner a much better solution. My skin doesn’t get ‘sticky’ and doesn’t itch anymore! I’ve seen some people with a Hickman using gauze but the tegaderm works well for me.

WOW you change it three times a week? It is advised only change it once a week because every time you expose your Hickman you open up the chance for infection, the least amount of exposure the better. I only use the chloroprep but the key is you have to let it completely dry, it takes a minute or two (what ever you do, don’t blow on it or fan it) that way it isn’t sticky.

Thank you Tina! I can’t believe how those antibiotics made me feel so awful. Glad we decided to stop them for now!
