NYC, Dana, And Me

This years Brewer’s Ball was a huge success. Word must have got out what a hit it was last year, they doubled in attendance.  Thanks to the great crew that joined us!

Maybe one of the reasons I have had the sniffles is the morning after the Brewer’s Ball, Dana and I took our first ever girls trip together. We traveled to New York City for a three day vacation. It was quite chilly and we did a lot of walking outside in the damp cold.

We had so much fun. We did everything! We went to the top of Rockefeller Center during the day, the top of the Empire State Building at night, saw a Broadway play, took a boat cruise to view the city and the Statue of Liberty at sunset, attended a taping of “Live with Kelly & Michael” morning show (thanks to my friend Angela for the tickets), took a brief jog in Central Park, walked through St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and so much more!

The most impressive part of our trip was the 9/11 Memorial Museum and reflection pools. If you ever go to NYC, plan on spending a day there. There is so much to see. I would also recommend the guided tour. It was wonderful to get the added knowledge. The emotions walking through the museum bring back memories about the horrible day our country was terrorized. It is a very touching tribute to the all the victims, families, firemen, police officers, and all that assisted during the attacks on America that day.ground zeroHealth notice: Monday’s doctor’s appointment went great! I was so nervous with the cold I have been suffering from. Turns out, I had some of the best lung functions yet!! I am still numb to the fact that if I have some congestion that it doesn’t include a hospital stay with a lung infection. Thank you to my donor for this experience.

Since April is Donate Life Month, yesterday I volunteered in the hallways at the University of Minnesota educating students and faculty about the importance of being a registered donor. We had some great conversations with many individuals. A few people that were not currently registered told us they were going to sign up.

April

April is National Donate Life Month. Each year, April is a month-long celebration of the gifts of organ, eye and tissue donation. April is a time to share this message about organ donation and transplantation. The goal is to reach the people in our communities and encourage them to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

I was recently honored by being named LifeSource’s Ambassador of the Year. I am truly touched by this distinguished award. On April 18th, LifeSource will be honoring me and the other award recipients at the annual Donate Life Day celebration. AmbassadorI love spreading awareness for organ donation with the hopes that others will not have to wait as long as I did for a transplant. On average, 21 people die while waiting for life saving transplants due to the lack of organs available. This month, please share with friends, family, and co-workers the importance of being a registered organ donor. Here is a link to be a registered donor if you don’t already have the Donor box checked on your license.organ-donor-formMark your calendar, Friday, April 17th, is National Donate Life Blue and Green Day. If you support organ donation check your wardrobe and wear blue and green.

Along with being named Ambassador of the Year, WCCO News will be featuring a piece about my journey on April 15th (tax day) on the 10pm evening news cast. Hopefully, sharing my story with their audience will change lives.

Health update, the cold that I thought was “quick” has re-surfaced. I have been a little congested. I had an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) appointment on Thursday for my routine nose squirt and I have yellow junk in my nostrils. I also had a red throat. I have lung functions and my regular lung doctor appointment tomorrow. I am nervous to see how my lung functions will be.

Have a wonderful Easter, Happy Passover, or maybe you celebrate Go For Broke Day, either way, I hope you are able to enjoy spending time with your family.Bunny with carrot

McNamara Irish Dinner

McNamara group

Shelley, Daryl. Travis, me, Paul, Suzy, Cedar, Julie, Jeff, & Rochelle

Back in November at the cystic fibrosis gala, Travis and I “won” a dinner. Not an ordinary dinner. A dinner that my previous doctor, Dr. McNamara, hosts at his house. With a name like McNamara, you can only guess it would be an Irish dinner! We had a great group of friends that joined us. We were greeted at the door by a bagpiper. My doctor, his wife, daughter and some of their friends help cook a delicious dinner filled with lamb, corned beef, potatoes, brown sugar carrots, Irish stew, soda bread, etc. for over twenty people! All the homemade recipes are from his wife’s grandmother in Ireland.

McNamara

Dr. McNamara & me

It was so much fun to see Dr. McNamara. He was my doctor at Children’s Minneapolis until I was the age of twenty five. At that age, I finally made the transition over to the University of Minnesota. It was tough leaving him, he was my primary physician for so many years. I am so lucky the move to a new clinic was smooth for me. I love my current primary doctor, Dr. Dunitz, and my entire health team.

Since my transplant, I had stopped in a few times at Children’s to say hello to all the staff that used to take care of me. Every time I dropped by, Dr. McNamara was out of the clinic. It was so fun to see him without wearing oxygen and showing him the deep breath I can now take!

Health update: After breaking my big toe a while ago, I am FINALLY walking in a regular shoe! It has been about a week now that I haven’t strapped on the boot.

Bigger news, I experienced a four day cold. FOUR DAYS!!!! I am still not used to the fact that if I get a sniffle, it won’t always turn into a hospital stay with months of I.V. medication. I am rather enjoying it 🙂

Don’t forget tomorrow, Friday, the 27th, is the Brewer’s Ball at the TCF Bank Stadium. The proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  There is still plenty of room to join us at the event. Click here for more information. FYI, for those of you ladies that may have a little bun in the oven but your husbands want to attend, we’ll work something out so you don’t have to pay for drinking.Brewer'sLastly, one of our friends bought one of Honey’s sisters. Her name is Piper. We scheduled a puppy play date a week ago. As if it isn’t cute enough seeing Honey run around being a floppy puppy, add another pup in the mix! It was so cute! They wore each other out running around for hours. They are definitely sisters, they are so similar in their personalities.

We get asked all the time is she real or a teddy bear? We call her our little Honey bear.Honey boardwalk

Pitbull Concert

My girlfriend, Christina, used to work with Cuban musician, Pitbull. Christina now has a friend who is working with Pitbull so they set aside tickets for us to see the Pitbull/Enrique Iglesias concert at Target Center on February 21st. We had the most amazing seats! We were right next to the stage. We couldn’t  have been any closer to the singers. The show was amazing with high energy. Thanks a ton Christina. We had a blast!

Last week, WCCO News, aired a very touching story about an amazing set of circumstances which led an organ donor to be matched with a recipient. Click on the link to watch the video about how these two were connected even before the transplant.

A quick little update with the pups in the house. Honey is a great puppy! She is already going to the door when she has to go potty. Rosie is being really good with Honey too.

I And You – This Weekend

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, I would recommend this play for You.

It blew our minds.

Travis, Dana, Lauren, and I went to the play “I and You” this last Sunday. It’s the play I was supporting when I was on the FOX 9 News episode advocating organ donation. It is an amazing production directed by Public Theater of Minnesota. At the end, Lauren said “it’s going to take me a week to get over the ending!” We all absolutely loved it.

Tickets are very reasonably priced. The play has a powerful message for both teens and adults. It is so cleverly written.. If you are looking for something to do tonight, tomorrow night, or Sunday afternoon, go see the play “I and you” playing at the Sabes JCC in St. Louis Park. Click on the link for ticket information. Be sure to notice the code for discounted tickets.

It’s A Girl!

Honey puppy face

Honey

Lately, I have been thinking that we should look into getting a puppy. Rosie is ten and a half now and if we were going to get a pup I didn’t want her to be too much older so she would enjoy having a little fur ball following her around.

Last Thursday, I called the same soft coated wheaten terrier breeders from whom we got Rosie. I was calling to see when they thought they might have a litter. She said, she has puppies right now! Friday, we still had not made a final decision whether or not we were ready for a puppy. We had to decide quickly.

Saturday afternoon, we went to “look” at the puppies. You know what happens when you “look” at puppies, you fall in love and you come home with one! Our new addition to the household is named Honey. She is just over six weeks old. Honey won’t be available to come home until February 27th. We can hardly wait!!

Wheaten terriers are very dark as puppies. Honey will eventually have a lighter color coat like Rosie. Here are a couple of pictures of Rosie. At three months she was still pretty dark.

As you can see, Honey should be a fitting name for an adult Wheaten.

Las Vegas, Mexico, And A Broken Toe

Las Vegas, Mexico, and a broken toe. Almost sounds like the name of a new movie. The last few weeks of my life feels like I’ve been in a movie!

I told you I have a lot to catch you up with. It starts with our neighbors, they were incredibly nice to let us borrow their snowmobiles for a whirl around the lake. The rush of going super fast on top of frozen water was awesome.  SnowmobileI called Dana on her birthday three weeks ago to see if she wanted to meet for an appetizer on her way home from work. When she showed up, we were wearing the same jacket. We were asked if we were part of an athletic team at the University of Minnesota. Talk about a great birthday gift, being asked if you are a college athlete when you turn thirty seven is a good day.

Happy Birthday Dana

Sometimes I don’t mind when Travis has to travel for work. Especially when I get to tag along! I was so excited to join Travis in Las Vegas two weeks ago. Other than my Judge Judy trip, I have not been on a plane for five years. I took my first trip on an airplane since my transplant. Not only did I get to fly but I was able to carry on my luggage! As a matter of fact, we were in Vegas for six days and we SHARED one carry on!1st plane rideSince I have been sixteen, I have always had to travel with a bunch of machines. Carrying on my clothes was difficult because I needed two suitcases for medical equipment i.e. vest treatment machine, nebulizer and accessories, medications, cleaning equipment, oxygen machine with extra batteries (airlines require 150% battery backup, which usually meant bringing 6 batteries which are not small or light). The flight attendants would always ask “that’s ALL medical?”.

This time, it was only a backpack with my medications. Even though I don’t have to carry all that stuff anymore, I still remember what it was like. It was more difficult and required more planning especially with the oxygen. I’m now fortunate to move about the cabin with ease.

The Saturday while we were in Vegas, we went out with our friends Bryan and Farrah (Bryan and Travis work together and we are all good friends).

Vegas

Travis, Byran, me and Farrah in Vegas

Since Travis and Bryan were there for work, they attended a couple of the conventions. I have always heard how big the Las Vegas Convention Center is, over three million square feet of exhibit space. One afternoon, I met up with the boys and walked around with them. It is huge! You couldn’t see everything in one day.

Even though they were working some of the time, we had a ton of fun while we were in Vegas. I enjoyed doing my own thing during the day while they were busy. Going in and out of the casinos and walking up and down the strip. We went to a few clubs, had some great food, saw a show, watched a UNLV basketball game in a suite, and rolled the dice a little playing craps.

Two friends of ours, Julz & Jon, both happened to be in Vegas at the same time. Jon was at the same convention as Travis and Bryan. Then Julz was there with her company. We actually ended up changing our flight and staying an extra day two days to spend some time with them. Good times.

Travis and Ben went to school together growing up. For the last two years, Richard, Ben’s father, has been waiting on the very same lung transplant list that I had waited on. We are very close to Ben and his family. When we were heading back from Vegas we received a text saying Richard got “the call” for his transplant. We landed in Kansas City for our lay over, I was crying in the airport restaurant because I was so happy and excited he was about to receive his new lungs.

Richard transplant

Jane & Richard with his new lungs

The surgery went well and he has had a great recovery so far. I happened to have a clinic appointment this last Wednesday when Richard was being released to go home. Well, he’s going to an apartment, their new home for a while. They live in Duluth and need to stick in the area for the next couple of months. I got to see him walk out of the hospital not carrying an oxygen tank. I couldn’t be happier for him.It was cold outside and he was worried about breathing the cold air. When you wear oxygen like both Richard and I used to, the cold air is very hard to breathe in. I told him, that’s the best part, its not difficult anymore. I can’t wait for him to start experiencing all the things his new lungs will allow him to do.

I know I often mention a request to say a prayer for my donor and their family. I would like to extend that request to include Richard’s donor, family, and continued success with his recovery.

We came home from Vegas for three days and it was time to turn around and get on another plane. We were on our way to Cozumel. Travis’ mom was turning sixty and requested a family vacation. The bonus was our niece, Lauren, also turned twelve, the day after Colleen turned sixty. It was five days of warm weather, relaxation, and celebration.

Cozumel hotelCozumel cliffThe night before we left for Mexico, I decided to wear socks and walk up our wooden stairs. Even though it was only the second step, I ended up slipping and coming down on a crunched toe. This happened in the evening and we had to leave for the airport at four in the morning. About three in the morning, my foot was throbbing terribly. The good news is, I have broken my foot before and I owned a walking boot. I said to Travis “you have to find my boot!”. I wasn’t going to let a hurt foot stop me from putting my feet in the warm sand.

Traveling with my boot

Traveling with my boot

My old lungs never gave me the the opportunity to snorkel. While in Cozumel, during my first snorkeling expedition with my new lungs, I had a very surreal and profound experience. I stuck my head under water, looked at the ocean floor, and took deep breaths. I embraced the beauty of the fish and the coral. But then, I realized what I was listening to. What I heard underwater was my donor breathing. I listen to my breaths all the time but this was different. It was amplified under water. All I could think was, thank you. Thank you to my donor for this incredible moment that we were sharing together. It was almost like my donor was speaking to me. Speaking through the power of breathing.

Listening to my donor

Listening to my donor

My friend Sarina has been trying to get me back into coaching figure skating. She is out of the country for three weeks and asked if I could help her while she is gone. I met her at the rink a few times and met some of her students. This week, I started filling in for her. Years ago, before I needed oxygen, I loved coaching. It has been really fun for me to be back at the rink.

Although, I am not on the ice at the moment. I am coaching from the sidelines. My foot was still bruised and sore so I went to the doctor to make sure it wasn’t something too severe. Turns out, my big toe is broken! Go figure, I always like to keep things interesting.

The reason I was on Fox9 News the other day was because there is a play at the the JCC Sabes Theatre in St. Louis Park called I and You. The play is about two teens that would have unlikely have become friends but the girl needs a transplant and the boy ends up helping her study and they share all their secrets. It is playing on weekends thru February 22nd.

Yesterday, we attended the Chilly Open in Wayzata. There is chili to taste at the Chilly Open but the main purpose is golf. That’s right, golf outside in Minnesota in February!  They carve out 9 hole golf courses on Lake Minnetonka. It’s basically putt putt golf with tennis balls on the frozen lake with a theme. This year’s theme was country. Thanks Jim and Lori, we had a blast with this group!
