Thanksgiving 2015

Monday, November 23rd, I dropped a letter off at LifeSource for my donor’s mom. I wanted to be sure she received it before Thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful for and I know at the holidays they have an empty seat at their table. There were five pages to the letter but I wanted to show you the last page. donor Thanksgiving letter '15On the way home from LifeSource, I started to feel chilled. I had the seat warmers on high but couldn’t seem to get warmer. I came in the house and that is when the chills really got bad. I crawled into bed and could not stop shaking. When Travis came home he added another layer of blankets but nothing seemed to warm me up. My back muscles hurt so bad because of the uncontrollable shivers.

I took my temperature and it was elevated. I decided to call the transplant coordinator on call since it was now six at night. While waiting for a call back, we checked my temp again. Yikes, it was 102.4! The doctor called me back and told me with a temp that high I needed to head to the E.R. The decision was made around 1:00a.m. to admit me. My “Wordless Wednesday” photo when I was discharged was a little more chipper than this pic from Monday in the E.R.

I felt so bad for Travis, he had to go home and come all the way back to the hospital. I change my insulin pump every three days and unfortunately, I left the house feeling so terrible I didn’t think to bring a replacement. This is something the hospital can’t provide since they do not carry these supplies. So there was no other choice.

After he arrived back around three in the morning, I was still in the E.R. They still didn’t have a room ready for me. I finally got upstairs around 5:00 AM. If you haven’t stayed in a hospital before, they assess you, go over medications, etc before you can relax.  After I was  able to turn the lights off an hour later, I only had about another hour and a half before the army of doctors, nurses, and technicians began their day. I had a great nurse though that tried his hardest to allow me to rest.

By Wednesday, all the tests came back normal and my fever had broken. Luckily the virus went away as fast as it arrived. They sent me home to rest for a few days.

When I was in the emergency room, I thought back to how many scary trips we had made there with my old lungs. As they started wheeling me off in the bed, Travis said, “You’re going for an X-ray without oxygen!” I laid there rolling down the hallway starring up at the lights passing by on the ceiling and I started to tear up. I felt so awful with a horrible temperature and headache but I was breathing fine. Thank you Jacob for healthy lungs.

We postponed our family’s Thanksgiving until Saturday. Although, Travis took our niece Lauren to our family friends, The Marker’s, and brought home leftovers.

I will now back track to two weekends ago, the fun stuff. We met up on Friday with our friend Aimee. She was in town for her birthday until Monday and we were definitely going to spend some time with her.

Saturday, before we headed to the annual Cystic Fibrosis Gala, we were glad we had a little extra time to stop by to say happy 40th birthday to our good friend, Reggie!

The CF Gala was amazing as always. It is incredible to be in a room where in only a couple of hours a big difference is made for those living with cystic fibrosis. Over $800,000 dollars was raised which will all go towards research.

The next day, we met up with Aimee again so we could watch the border battle, Vikings vs. Packers. It didn’t end in our favor but it was great to spend time together before she left town.

I’m not sure if you have seen the news about the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado last week? The police officer that was shot and killed, Garrett Swasey, was a friend of mine. While I was living on the East Coast, training for figure skating, we trained together. I had not spoken to him in a number of years but he was always one of the nicest guys. Click on the link if you would like to read the nice article the US Figure Skating Association wrote about him. The world has lost a great police officer, pastor, and family man.

Worded Wednesday

Friday of Halloween weekend we showed up at the neighbors for a party. Knowing there were going to be a bunch of kids in line to tour the haunted house that serves as a garage the other 364 days of the year, I wanted to bring some very special “food” items. I had saved my “blister bandages” and Travis spent a whole two days collecting “ear wax”. They were delicious!Band-Aids Q-TipsThe next day, Halloween, Travis booked a last minute trip to meet up with some work people in Chicago. You know how this goes, I tagged along 🙂 We were able to spend the night with our friends, Tony, Agata, & their eleven month old, Mr. Quinn. It was fun to see Quinn’s first costume.

It just happened the Vikings were playing the Bears that Sunday in Chicago and it just happened we had tickets. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for me to wear my very own Viking costume…

After eight years of not beating the Bears on Chicago turf, the Vikings came home with a great win. We went straight from the stadium to the airport. The security guard must not have been in a good mood after her team lost. She didn’t think it was so funny when a Viking walked through her line at the Chicago O’Hare airport.

While we were gone, Honey got to spend some time with her sister, Piper. It is so cute to see them together. They just love each other.

Every two years, LifeSource hosts a Symposium. It is where the donation and transplant medical community come together for a full day of education, encouragement, hope, and inspiration.

I was so thrilled to be there in person this year! You may remember, two years ago, I was asked to speak at the LifeSource Symposium. Since I was so newly transplanted, I was not yet allowed to be in such a large group due to the high dose of immuno-suppresants I was taking at the time. I could not risk being near people that may have been sick considering I had a very low immune system. Travis had to speak on my behalf.

Hearing personal stories and learning about the medical technology advancements, it was a very emotional and inspiring day. We are so lucky we live in a time where so many opportunities are available.

I even ran into one of the gals, Siri, who used to take care of me way back when I was at Children’s Hospital. It is still so fun to run into people that I haven’t seen since my surgery. She is now working with the company that makes the vest machine I used to have to use everyday. I’m so lucky that machine was around, but I do love the fact that I don’t need it anymore!

This last Friday, A bunch of us girls that regularly get together had our Holly Jolly Holiday get together. We were able to score a private dining area at one of our favorite restaurants, Butcher & The Boar. If you love meat, you have to try it! They also have a neat indoor beer tent that is open all year round. Let’s just say, we had such a good time, we cleared the table!

We added a detail to my birthday party. You already know the theme is NEON. The party will kick off at 6:00pm. We are excited to announce, Tim Mahoney, Minnesota based singer and contestant on Season 1 of the NBC hit TV show “The Voice”, will be providing entertainment starting around 7:00!

Many of you in the past have helped me deliver toys to Toys for Tots. I always drop off the “goods” on my birthday. This is a very special birthday. I am able to celebrate my 40th birthday because of my donor.

I have started collecting toys (and/or donations for shopping). If you were planning on donating to the cause already, or if you would like to donate in honor of my donor, please allow me to be your delivery gal. Last year, due to all of your help, I dropped off over three hundred toys! For those who prefer to contribute electronically to the cause, you can PayPal me at dnikkitsf@aol.com (all proceeds go towards toys).

Health update: I was wondering if my medication level that has been elevated lately was back in check. I noticed my headaches seemed to have disappeared. I received my results today, my level back within the normal range!

Everything for now is stable. I have lung function tests in December. It will be interesting to see if I am still expanding these pink beauties.

FABULOUS 40RTY NEON PARTY!

Save the date!! Join us on Saturday, December 19th, as we celebrate my fabulous 40th Birthday!

While growing up, I knew my parents were told I would probably only live to be about eight years old. That was the life expectancy for those living with cystic fibrosis.

I am so blessed to be living to achieve this amazing milestone I never thought I would ever reach. It is the holiday season, but if you can stop by for a little cheer, I would love to see you. Feel free to spread the news and invite others to join us as we CELEBRATE LIFE!

We will send more details later, but the party will be held upstairs in the private room at Jackson’s Hole Bar & Grill located at 106 North 3rd Street, in downtown Minneapolis.

We are working on entertainment. But, if you’re wondering why I chose these fun text colors, it’s because the theme for this party is NEON!

Fantastic Fall Fun

I’ve been busy lately, but I will try to limit my words to a paragraph on each little story and let you interpret the pictures.

A couple of weekends ago was the Breathe Easy Music Festival benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I have spoken at this event in the past and I was honored to be asked to speak once again this year. There was a ton of music memorabilia that was included in the silent and live auctions and the bands were great!

Speaking at Breathe Easy Music Festival

After listening to some fun music with some great friends and raising money for an important cause, we said goodbye and headed to a birthday party.

Our friend, Kara, moved to Singapore a year ago but she was back in town visiting for the first time since she left. She was hosting a birthday party for her new fiance, Brent. They know all parties are better if there’s a theme, so they threw a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) party. We changed in the car and I slapped some face paint on to both of our mugs.

Whenever we have a themed party to attend, I always start by “shopping” at my parents house. They have stored several of my more fashionable clothing items from the last quarter century. When it comes to dressing in costume, I can almost always come up with something. Don’t hate me but last time I wore this dress, I was sixteen years old!! I couldn’t believe I could still squeeze into it!

The next day, our neighbors hosted an old fashioned cider press party. They have done this in the past and we look forward to it every year. It is always the best cider you have ever tasted!

We were fortunate to spend some more time with Kara during her week long stay. I am elated that the next time I see her, I will be standing by her side as one of her bridesmaids while she marries the man of her dreams. Can’t wait to celebrate their impending nuptials in April.

This summer, Travis was on a lawn bowling team with a few of the guys. Proving once again that all gatherings are better with a theme; instead of a simple dinner with friends, we called this the “Lawn Rangers Team Banquet”.

My brother had bought us tickets to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Last week, we attended Mary Poppins. I took this picture of Travis without even knowing there was someone standing behind him, until a friend commented on his post ” Can we talk about your hair? Going for the man bun these days Trav??”

I also met up with my friend Jennifer last weekend. We had our own little “Friday Farewell Tour” to say goodbye to a couple of restaurants downtown that were closing for good. Luckily, Travis and I also made it to La Belle Vie for dinner a couple of weeks ago.

The tacos at Masa were awesome!

Our friend Julz gave us tickets to the Gopher Hockey Game this last Friday. It’s so fun to watch college hockey, thanks to her, we watched it live. Thanks Julz!

We were so excited to have our friend, jazz musician, Kat Edmonson, in town again playing at the Dakota Jazz Club on Monday night. We had a great crew to see her perform and brought some newbies, our friends Richie & Mickey. They fell in love with her just like we did the first time we heard her.

Health report: I have finally kicked my “boot” to the curb!! I am now walking in regular shoes but my foot is definitely still in the healing process. It still hurts a little while walking. It throbs at night when I’ve walked too much. Hopefully, in a couple more weeks I won’t notice a thing.

The headaches are still prevalent. My medication level that triggers them is SLOWLY coming down. I have always been so sensitive to medications so they are cutting the dose in small increments. The headaches have been a little less intense, but I’m ready to be done with them.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween!Halloween Pumpkins
